Chapter twelve

Olivia

I'm wrapping up the day's work, the soft buzz of the office dimming into evening stillness, when my phone vibrates sharply. Glancing at the screen, I see Alex's name.

He probably wants to know where we should go for dinner. His voice, when I answer, carries an unusual edge of urgency.

"Olivia, you've got to get to the conference room. Dominic's called an urgent meeting," he says, and I can almost picture the frown creasing his brow.

My heart skips a beat. Why would Dominic call a meeting now. Does he want to tell Alex about me? I swallow hard.

Every time I think I should tell Alex, I just can’t bring myself to do it and ruin what we have. And the longer I wait, the worse all of this can become.

"Any idea what this is about?" I ask, already shuffling papers into my bag.

I can feel the tension knotting in my stomach as Alex's voice, equal parts urgency and irreverence, fills my ear. "No clue. He just called in, demanding to see us immediately," he says, the usually smooth cadence of his speech clipped with tension.

"Said he will be here in five, and Maxwell seems to think we should give in to all his demands because he's a major client. But, honestly, he acts like a dickhead most of the time."

I frown, the familiar annoyance at Dominic's high-handed tactics mingling with a growing apprehension. "I'll see you in a couple of minutes." I try to steady my voice, my mind already racing through possible scenarios.

Then, in typical Alex fashion, he shifts the mood, his voice softening playfully. “Hey, are you okay baby? We can still get dinner afterwards, or I could just eat you out. That’s my preference."

I feel a flush creep up my cheeks. "Alex," I reprimand, a mix of embarrassment and amusement in my tone.

His laughter, warm and familiar, echoes through the phone before he hangs up.

Shaking my head, I try to refocus. The thought of Alex's teasing promise lingers, a tantalizing distraction, but I push it to the back of my mind.

I gather my notes, steeling myself for the meeting ahead. Whatever Dominic's issue is, I need to be prepared.

I stride into the conference room, my gaze meeting Alex's briefly before turning to Dominic Purcell, our enigmatic client. "Good to see you again, Dominic," I greet, settling into my seat with an air of professionalism.

Dominic responds with a nod, his enthusiasm noticeably absent.

"As I was saying," Dominic begins, cutting straight to the chase, his body language exuding a mix of impatience and urgency.

"I know we've been gearing up for a courtroom battle, fine-tuning our strategy and all, but the situation has changed. We need to settle this outside court." His voice carries a decisive tone, yet there's a subtle edge to it, hinting at something unsaid, a deeper concern perhaps lurking beneath the surface.

I lean forward slightly, my attention sharpening. This shift in direction is unexpected, and I can sense Alex's heightened alertness beside me.

Dominic’s sudden call for a settlement, after all our preparation for trial, raises more questions than it answers.
